This year we launched a survey and vote for our Breed of the Year. The goal of this initiative is to educate and inspire both makers and fibre farmers, so that our local fibre flocks expand and flourish! Our community voted:
The Breed of the Year for 2025 is: Valais Blacknose Sheep
The Blacknose sheep originates from the Valais canton of Switzerland. They are a sturdy breed that is well adapted to the harsh conditions of the mountains. There is evidence that the Blacknose has existed since the 15th century, however the breed standard didn't get recognized until 1962. They have been gaining in popularity ever since.
Sometimes called the ‘world’s cutest sheep’ it is hard not to fall in love with this breed.
According to the Valais Blacknose Sheep Society the breed standard requires:
“The Valais Blacknose has a robust and large-framed physique.
The black nose should be centered and it is preferred that it extend up to the eyes. The ears are also black and extend up to the base of the head. There should be black colorations on the ankles and on the front knees. The females have black tail spots.
Helical or spiral-shaped horns are typical of both ewes and rams and should be well balanced.
The head and the legs should exhibit wool growth evenly and be well covered.”

About Valais Blacknose Wool
Valais Blacknose sheep produce a coarse, long-stapled (6 to 12 inches) fleece with a high micron count (around 38–40+ microns). Their wool is durable and well-suited for rugs, felting, outerwear, and decorative crafts. The heavy fleeces (9 - 13 lbs per year) have a distinctive white and black pattern and are valued by fiber artists for its texture and visual appeal.
