Fleece Show & Sale 2025

We invite sheep producers across the country to enter their fleeces to our annual fleece competition. We also encourage producers to sell their fleeces during the sale at the Manitoba Fibre Festival (September 5th & 6th, 2025).

Exciting Wool Show Update! For the first time ever, the Manitoba Fibre Festival will have micron testing being done in conjunction with our fleece assessments!

Corinna Drust from Art of Fibre will also be available in the Red Barn performing micron testing for ALL fibre types (wool, alpaca, mohair & angora) on September 5th and 6th for $5 per sample (cash sale only).

About the Show & Sale

Wool Auction: Grand champion, Reserve champion and first place fleeces in each category will be sold via silent auction (unless marked "Not for Sale").

Date: Friday September 5th from 5:00 pm to Saturday September 6th at 3:00 pm

Judging Information:

Date: September 5th, 2025

Location: Red River Exhibition Place

Judge: Susie Gourlay

Fleeces are judged as a hand spinner/artisan show and are assessed for soundness, cleanliness including yield, as well as handle, staple length, crimp style and uniformity characteristic to the breed.

Fleeces can be submitted for sale only, without being entered into the wool show. The cost is $5 per fleece.

Fleeces submitted must be from this year's clip and placed in a CLEAR PLASTIC BAG. The fleeces should be skirted and not heavily contaminated with vegetable matter.

NEW Micron Testing

What is a micron count? A micron is a unit of measurement to describe a diameter of the fibre (e.g. 1,000 microns = 1 mm). The micron count, or fibre diameter, is the single most important fibre trait with regards to commercial processing, and is one of the most heritable fibre traits.

For producers, a micron count is an objective measurement of “softness”. Using this tool can help determine the relative value of a fleece, or the genetic ability of an animal to produce “good wool” and/or produce progeny that produce good fleeces. Micron counts will be recorded on the judge scoring sheets, which producers will receive back at the end of the show and sale. Buyers of the fleeces may take a picture of the scoring sheets for their records.

Corinna Drust from Art of Fibre will also be available in the Red Barn performing micron testing for ALL fibre types (wool, alpaca, mohair & angora) on September 5th and 6th for $5 per sample (cash sale only). Producers submitting their fleeces for sale only may consider retrieving a sample and having it tested in the Red Barn during regular event hours. If you wish for this information to be recorded on your fleece ID sheet, please find Shirley Harvey at the wool show & sale table. Information regarding sampling and understanding your test results can be found online here: https://artoffibre.com/guide-to-testing/taking-samples/

Please note that if there is a large volume of samples to be tested, they may need to be taken back to Camrose, Alberta with results issued via email after the festival is over. Don’t miss out on this exclusive opportunity to have your fibre samples tested and immediate results issued on site at the Manitoba Fibre Festival this year!
