Gerry Oliver Award for Excellence in Fibre Farming

The Gerry Oliver Award for Excellence in Fibre Farming celebrates sheep farmers making a significant contribution in the areas of wool production and promoting wool sheep breeds.

This award recognizes dedication to preserving unique sheep genetics, conservation efforts for rare and at-risk sheep breeds and the educational contributions of the recipient promoting fibre farming in Canada.

2025 Recipient - Margaret Brook

In 2012, Margaret Brook founded the Manitoba Fibre Festival with a vision to bring together farmers, fibre artists, natural dyers, and the broader community to celebrate Manitoba’s local textile industry. What began in a small community centre in St. Norbert has grown—thanks to her tireless work and unwavering passion—into a vibrant, weekend-long festival hosted at the Red River Exhibition grounds.

Under Margaret’s leadership, the Festival became much more than an event. It grew into a trusted gathering space offering hands-on workshops, a bustling vendor market, live animal displays, and interactive demonstrations. She built not only an event but a brand and a network that has become central to fibre arts and sustainable textiles in Manitoba.

The Manitoba Fibre Festival is not the only contribution Margaret has made to the Manitoba Fibre Community. She also co-raises a Shetland sheep flock in Eastern Manitoba and she has worked tirelessly to promote the Shetland breed and contribute to the sharing of resources, breeding stock and awareness of this important and beautiful sheep breed.

Margaret has generously shared resources, knowledge, coordination and breeding stock to other farmers throughout Western Canada and has developed the Manitoba Shetland Sheep Project to continue and expand this work.

Margaret has laid the foundation for a thriving fibre arts community rooted in education, celebration, and small-scale economic opportunity.

The Manitoba fibre arts landscape would not be what it is today without Margaret’s vision, leadership, and hard work. We are deeply grateful for all she has given.

2024 Recipient - Gerry Oliver

This year marks the establishment of the award by the Manitoba Fibre Festival, and recognizes its namesake Gerry Oliver and her decades of work raising sheep and promoting wool in Manitoba.

Gerry Oliver owns and operates Spirit Sands Shepherds in Carberry, Manitoba. Her flock of over 200 sheep includes many rare breeds, such as Wensleydale, Cotswold and Romney. She focuses on quality breeding stock, breed preservation and the highest quality fleeces and fibre for handspinning markets.

Gerry is an accomplished artist and educator. She has served on local and national sheep boards including the Manitoba Fibre Festival, Manitoba Sheep Association and Canadian Cooperative Wool Growers, and put in countless hours promoting wool at public events.

As the long-time coordinator of the wool shows at Blue Hills and the Manitoba Fibre Festival Gerry has inspired many farmers to improve the quality of their fleeces. She has also won numerous awards for her fleeces at shows across the country.

The Manitoba Fibre Festival board of directors is grateful to Gerry for her continuing valuable contribution to fibre farming. We look forward to honouring her work through this award in the years ahead.
