Wool is one of two major products derived from sheep. It comes in many forms, from fine, medium and long wool, all the way to specialty wools. The wool from each breed has unique characteristics and unique uses. Evaluating wool requires that we look at several parts of the fleece to determine both the best characteristics, as well as the degree of fault.
LEVEL 1
During this 1 ½ day course, participants will study the characteristics of the four groupings of wool, learn to recognize various faults, come to understand scoring methods and undertake practice judging and scoring. This is a valuable course for anyone producing, selling, or working with wool.
Ages 14+
Students Bring to Class: An apron, pen and notebook, a calculator (not your phone - one from a dollar store is great) and a ruler.
Price Breakdown: Materials fee is $25 for manual, printed handouts, wool samples; Instructor fee $200
Meet the Instructor: Susie Gourlay, Knit Natural
Susie Gourlay is a certified wool judge, fibre artist, and designer based in Saskatchewan. Since earning her wool judging certification through Olds College in 2012, she has judged both commercial and artisan wool shows across the Canadian prairies. Susie is deeply committed to supporting the wool industry and has presented and taught numerous classes and workshops nationwide. Her teaching spans topics such as wool judging, spinning, fleece-to-finish techniques, and strategies for maximizing the value of wool. With years of hands-on experience and a passion for fibre arts, Susie brings practical knowledge and creative insight to every learning opportunity.

Workshop Cancellation Policy
A full refund will be issued if a workshop is cancelled by the Manitoba Fibre Festival for any reason, including instructor illness or low enrollment.
Student cancellations made by September 1st will be refunded the materials and registration fee, less a $10 admin fee. Withdrawals after September 1st will be refunded the materials fee only.
