WIDE SASH WEAVING ON THE INKLE LOOM (FR) with Gisèle Rondeau

Friday, September 11th, 1 - 5pm, (4 hours)
THIS WORKSHOP WILL BE DELIVERED IN FRENCH. 

In this hands-on weaving workshop, participants will learn about the Métis and French Canadian sash (ceinture fléchée) history and explore how to design and create a meaningful pattern using colours that represent their own identity, story, or personal expression. They will learn how to plan their design, prepare and set up a floor inkle loom following their custom pattern accurately, and properly thread and tension the warp before beginning to weave. Throughout the session, participants will develop foundational weaving skills such as maintaining even tension and creating clean edges. Using durable acrylic yarn, each person will weave their own sash, resulting in a vibrant, personalized piece that reflects both their creativity and newly learned technical skills. NOTE: While this workshop is scheduled for 4hrs and priced accordingly, some students may need an extra 30 minutes to complete their sash. Students who need this extra time can stay to finish until 5:30pm at no further charge.

Meet the Instructor: Gisèle Rondeau

Gisèle is a retired teacher with 39 years of experience. She has taught weaving to countless school-aged students and, more recently, upon retiring, adult learners through community workshops. She specializes in basic floor inkle loom weaving and Baltic-style pick-up techniques. A self-taught finger weaver, she is currently working on her sixth Assomption-style ceinture fléchée. Recognized as a professional artist by the Manitoba Arts Council since May 2025, she has successfully completed seven grant-funded collaborative projects with schools and community partners. Her workshops integrate cultural and historical context alongside hands-on instruction, fostering creativity, technical skill, and meaningful connection to textile traditions.

Workshop Cancellation Policy
A full refund will be issued if a workshop is cancelled by the Manitoba Fibre Festival for any reason, including instructor illness or low enrollment.
Student cancellations made by September 1st will be refunded the materials and registration fee, less a $10 admin fee. Withdrawals after September 1st will be refunded the materials fee only.

TISSAGE DE CEINTURE FLÉCHÉE, LARGE (FR) - Gisèle Rondeau

Vendredi le 11 septembre 2026, 13 h à 17 h (4 heures) 110 $

Cet atelier est offert en Français.

Dans cet atelier de tissage pratique, les participants découvriront l'histoire de la ceinture fléchée chez les Métis et les Canadiens Français et exploreront comment concevoir et créer un motif significatif à l'aide de couleurs qui représentent leur identité, leur histoire ou leur expression personnelle. Ils apprendront à planifier leur motif, à préparer et à installer un métier à tisser à pédales en suivant précisément leur motif personnalisé, et à enfiler et tendre correctement la chaîne avant de commencer à tisser. Tout au long de la séance, les participants développeront des compétences de base en tissage. Le maintien d'une tension uniforme et la réalisation de bords nets sera expliqué. À l'aide de fil acrylique durable, chaque participant tissera sa propre ceinture, créant ainsi une pièce vibrante et personnalisée qui reflète à la fois sa créativité et ses nouvelles compétences techniques.

NOTEZ BIEN : Bien que cet atelier soit prévu pour 4 heures et que le prix soit indiqué en conséquence, certains participants pourraient avoir besoin de 30 minutes supplémentaires pour terminer leur ceintures fléchées. Dans ce cas, ils peuvent rester jusqu’à 17 h 30 sans frais supplémentaires, et serait sage d'être prêts en conséquence.

Rencontrez votre instructrice: Gisèle Rondeau

Gisèle est une enseignante retraitée avec 39 ans d'expérience. Elle a enseignée le tissage à d'innombrables élèves d’age scolaire et, après sa retraite, à des adultes lors d'ateliers communautaires. Elle se spécialise dans le tissage sur métier à tisser à lanières et les techniques de tissage baltes. Tisseuse aux doigts autodidacte, elle travaille à sa sixième ceinture fléchée du style de  l’Assomption. Reconnue comme artiste professionnelle par le Conseil des Arts du Manitoba depuis mai 2025, elle a mené sept projets collaboratifs financés par des subventions, et en partenariat avec des écoles et des organismes communautaires. Ses ateliers intègrent le contexte culturel et historique à l'apprentissage pratique, favorisant ainsi la créativité, le développement des compétences, des techniques et un lien profond avec les traditions textiles.
