Friday, September 11th, 7 - 9pm, (2 hours)
Massive wreaths and other framed works of art made from hair can be seen in museums today. A token of friendship, a family tree, a remembrance of those passed -- hair was an incredibly meaningful sentimental material in Victorian times.
In this workshop led by Winnipeg hairwork artist Sandra Klowak, you’ll create a 5-petal flower from hair, based on the traditional hairwork technique used to create framed hair wreaths in the 1800s.
We will use synthetic hair and learn the basic looping technique behind this historic craft. Together we will create 5 hair petals to assemble a flower (or whatever other creations participants dream up!)
Price Breakdown: $10 materials fee includes synthetic hair, wire, embellishments, $48 registration fee
Ages: 12+
Meet the Instructor: Sandra Klowak, Corporeal Curios Victorian Hairwork
Sandra Klowak (she/her) creates art with hair and other organic matter, inspired by the historic crafting tradition of Victorian Hairwork. She is fascinated by hair’s ability to immortalize the body through art.
Klowak lives in Winnipeg (Treaty 1 territory) with her partner, two children and cat. In their spare time she and her family enjoy exploring Manitoba, camping and visiting its many amazing historic museums.
Sandra is passionate about preserving local history, and served for 7 years on the board of Seven Oaks House and Ross House Museums, and for 3 years on the board of Friends of Lower Fort Garry.
