Meet the Instructor: Shelly Nicolle - Phillips, Hooked on the Prairies Fibre Arts
Shelly grew up in PEI and moved west to Regina, Saskatchewan, in 2002. She first picked up a hook in 2015 and while she is largely self taught, genetics may also be at play as her paternal grandmother was also a rug hooker and hooked beautiful traditional rugs to keep the farmhouse floors warm.
Drawing on the traditional rug hooking technique, Shelly uses the texture and colours of natural fibres in a non traditional way creating work with great depth and texture.
Shelly is a juried member of the Saskatchewan Craft Council and has had her work in solo and group shows and finds great joy in teaching others. Shelly’s Prairie Alphabet Project was featured in a number of publications and was acquired by the Saskatchewan Arts Board for their permanent collection.
