INTRO TO FLAX SPINNING with Amy Waschenfelder

Saturday, September 12th, 1 - 4pm, (3 hrs)

Learn to spin flax with confidence! Designed for spinners with prior wheel spinning experience, this class focuses on the unique properties of flax and how they influence fibre preparation, drafting, twist, and finishing techniques. Participants will learn about the characteristics of flax as a bast fibre, including how it differs from wool and other commonly spun natural fibres. The workshop covers the basics of flax processing, fibre preparation, and an introduction to dry and wet spinning methods commonly used for flax. The class also addresses plying, washing, and finishing, as well as care considerations specific to flax. 

Students Bring to Class: Spinning wheel, extra bobbins, hand carders, lazy kate, and knitty noddy. Optional but recommended: flick carder, additional whorls for wheel (faster), light and dark colored aprons for lap. 

Price Breakdown: $50 materials fee includes full strick of line flax and 4 oz of tow, $72 registration fee

Ages: 14+, with prior wheel spinning experience (can accommodate younger if they are experienced and keen)

Meet the Instructor: Amy Waschenfelder

Amy is an experienced spinner and fibre artist specializing in yarn design and construction. She holds an Ontario Handweavers and Spinners Spinning Certificate and is currently working on her thesis toward formal Master Spinner certification. Her spinning practice encompasses a wide range of fibres including flax, wool, cotton and other natural fibres.Amy brings a mentorship background to her fibre work, drawing on management experience in government roles focused on training, mentorship, and communication. Her teaching philosophy emphasizes clear technical instruction and helping students understand why fibres behave as they do, building confidence, independence, and joy at the wheel.

Workshop Cancellation Policy
A full refund will be issued if a workshop is cancelled by the Manitoba Fibre Festival for any reason, including instructor illness or low enrollment.
Student cancellations made by September 1st will be refunded the materials and registration fee, less a $10 admin fee. Withdrawals after September 1st will be refunded the materials fee only.
