PATTERN MAKING WITH MORDANTS with Francesca Carella Arfinengo
Friday, September 11th, 7 - 9pm, (2 hrs)
In this course, students will create a repeating pattern design on two 24" square cotton bandanas using mordant painting and natural dye pigments. Mordant painting allows you to directly paint onto the fabric with a thickened paste made from metal salts like alum and iron, to attract the pigment to specific areas on your fabric. Participants will take mordant pastes home to continue learning. This class is open for people of all ages and experience in textiles. Join and experiment with this easy surface design process and the magic of natural dyeing!
Students Bring to Class: rubber gloves and apron, ideas for designs
Price Breakdown: $57 materials fee includes two organic cotton bandanas, scrap fabric, mordant pastes, brushes and tools, dye powders and other dye materials , $48 registration fee

Meet the Instructor: Francesca Carella Arfinengo
Francesca Carella Arfinengo is an artist who works in textiles, text, photography and socially engaged modalities. Her work is rooted in her lived experience as a first -generation immigrant. Themes in her work include late-capitalism discontent, grief, agency and interdependence of species. She is a member of the Miradorx Art Collective (previously called Mujer Artista group) and a resident artist at the Misericordia Health Centre. Francesca grew up in Arequipa, Peru and identifies as a settler of mixed ancestry. She is grateful to live and work in Treaty 1 territory.
Workshop Cancellation Policy
A full refund will be issued if a workshop is cancelled by the Manitoba Fibre Festival for any reason, including instructor illness or low enrollment.
Student cancellations made by September 1st will be refunded the materials and registration fee, less a $10 admin fee. Withdrawals after September 1st will be refunded the materials fee only.
